Watershed Erosion and Sediment Inventon(Separate Boz)
In 2001, an inventory of the Finley Creek«atershed was done to estimate the average annual rate of
erosion and sedimentation. Statistically valid sampling units were selected that represent 10%of the
watershed. Field inventories were conducted on these units to assess current erosion conditions. This data
was then used to calculate the annual average sheet and rill, ephemeral, gully and streambank erosion.
This information from the sample units was expanded to calculate sediment delivery rates for each type of
erosion and the sediment transport factor for the watershed. Ultimately, the goal was to estimate the total
sediment load at the mouth of Finley Creek to Lake Decatur. The results are as follows:
Tota1 Sediment Load Delivered=23,910-25,060 tons from 18,865 acres annually
SHEET AND RILL EPHEMERAL GULLY STREAMBAIvK
EROSION EROSION EROSION EROSION
41,SSO TONS 15.000 TONS 77O TONS 1,400 TONS
ANNIJALLY, 58,720 TONS OF SOIL ERODING IN FINLEY
CREEK WATERSIiED
22,760 TONS REACH 35,960 TONS OF SOIL
LAKE DECATUR ARE RE-DEPOSITED
IN THE WATERSHED
1,150-2,300 TONS OF SOIL
FROM BEDIAAD MATERIAL
Arrlvual,LY, 23,910-25,060 TONS OF 17,070 TONS OF solL
SOIL ARE DELIVERED ON AVERAGE TO CAN BE REDUCED '
LAKE DECATUR
WITH CONSERVATION
Conclusion
The Finley Creek watershed is contributing to the issues in Lake Decaiur. To address the problems that
are faced with the Lake, they must be addressed with input of stalceholders within each sub-watershed.
With the input of the Finley Creek Committee this plan becomes a more useable tool.
The existing problems will only get worse with development and construction that is expected to occur in
the future. Planning and preparing for these issues now•will reduce potential problems of the future and
improve cunent conditions. Everyone is encouraged to use this plan and learn more about his or her
watershed.
OS/31/02 14
