Berard, Civil Engineer II j
SUBJECT:
Vulcan West Gravel Pit Water Supply Improvements '
City Project No. CP 2002-07 I
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: I
City staff recommends Council adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the award of a contract
to Burdick Plumbing & Heating Co., Inc. for the supply and installation of a floating pump unit i
in the amount of$219,069.00.
BACKGROUND:
During periods of severe drought, there is not sufficient flow in the Sangamon River to maintain
an adequate water level in Lake Decatur. To provide supplemental water during dry weather, the
City has three emergency water supply systems: the DeWitt County Wellfield, Cisco Wells and
the Vulcan Gravel Pit.
This project will improve the Vulcan Gravel Pit system. It will provide for the installation of a
floating pumping unit having a capacity of 4.32 million gallons per day. The pumping unit will
be floated on a barge over the deepest section of the pit and will be permanently anchored in one
location. It will incorporate all required components for remote operation, including power
cable and discharge pipe connected to an existing pipeline. The operation and maintenance
expenses for this vital supplemental water system are projected to be very low.
The project specifications were prepared by Bainbridge Gee Milanski & Associates, Inc.,
Consulting Engineers. The project was advertised on May 8, 2002. A single bid proposal was
submitted as follows:
—
