Newell, P.E., City Engineer SUBJECT: Proposed Addition to the Street Restoration Project, City Project 2002-08 SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution authorizing an increase in the project funding for the Street Restoration Project, City Project 2002-08. The City is currently under contract with Dunn Company for $1,141,382.64 to perform the subject project which provides milling and bituminous overlay work for the City. The resolution enables the City Manager and the Director of Engineering & Infrastructure to increase the contract amount up to $82,000 to perform additional base failure repair work and to perform additional street resurfacing. BACKGROUND: The City performs an annual street base failure repair project on a yearly basis, this work generally consists of full depth bituminous patching of various street sections that have failed. This work is normally done at isolated spots on roads that do not currently need major resurfacing. The objective of this project is to lengthen the life of a pavement by repairing areas of significant damage. The City's current project provides some base failure repair work, however, the quantities are not provided on the contract to enable the contractor to complete the base failure quantities that have been cataloged by City Engineering. City staff is proposing that sufficient funding be authorized to allow additional base failure work be completed under the current Street Restoration Project currently being performed by Dunn Company. The added base failure work will add approximately$70,000 to the current contract. Dunn Company is generally the major bidder on the City's asphalt projects and is generally the sole bidder on the City's base failure work.
