Newell, P.E., City Engineeryv✓
SUBJECT: Union/Church Alley Combined Sewer Replacement, City Project 2002-23
' SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution awarding the
contract for Union / Church Alley Combined Sewer Replacement, City Project 2002-23, to
Burdick Plumbing & Heating Co., Inc., as the lowest, responsible bidder in the amount of
$154,765, and that the Mayor be authorized to execute the contract, and the City Clerk to attest.
BACKGROUND:
A sewer collapse occurred in a portion of the subject sewer in the late 2001. This collapse was
repaired with an emergency work order. At the time of the collapse an in depth inspection was
made of the combined sewer system in the Union / Church alley north of Grand Avenue and
south of Division Street. The segment of sewer in the alley between Grand
and Division was in overall poor shape and in dire need of replacement.
The project specifications were prepared by the Engineering Division. The project was
advertised on May 29, 2002 and bids were opened on June 18, 2002. The results of the letting
are as follows (bid tabulation attached):
Compared to
Engineer's Est.
Bidder Bid Price Over(-Under
Engineer's Estimate $242,870.00 -----
Burdick Plumbing &
Heating Co., Inc. $154,765.00 (36.28%)
Entler Excavating Co., Inc. $173,332.00 (28.63%)
