' . Albert, Fire Chief oCt,Q_
Matthew C. Newell, P.E., City Engineer
SUBJECT: Fire Station Training& Storage Building, City Project 2001-30
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution awarding the
proposal for the Fire Station Training & Storage Building, City Project 2001-30, to Building
Systems of Illinois, Inc., in the amount of$366,017, and that the Mayor be authorized to execute
the agreement, and the City Clerk to attest.
BACKGROUND:
In September 2001, City staff requested proposals from qualified companies to design and
construct a pre-engineered building suitable for the storage of reserve fire equipment and house a
training classroom.
The proposed facility is to provide heated storage space for three vehicles, the Police Mobile
Command Center, the Fire Safety House and a reserve aerial fire truck. The facility will keep
these vehicles out of the elements and in a controlled environment which will facilitate minor
maintenance and upkeep work. The facility would allow the Fire Department to hold its fire
prevention sessions indoors with the Fire Safety House during adverse weather conditions
instead of holding these sessions outdoors or canceling them.
The classroom space is needed to hold at least 40 students. The Decatur Fire Department is now
a Regional Training Center for the University of Illinois Fire Institute in hazardous materials and
terrorism training. This designation allows the City to train its employees here at home without
the extra expenses of motels, food and mileage. It will also bring individuals from other
jurisdictions into the City for training. The training center will be available for police and other
agencies which will also save money. The Fire Department is in the process of setting up classes
for the coming fall.
