Newell, P.E., City Engineer,A,,
VN-,
SUBJECT: Shadow Lane Sanitary Sewer Outfall Study, City Project 2002-06
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
An item on the agenda for the March 4, 2002, City Council Meeting is the authorization of an
agreement for design services with Bainbridge, Gee, Milanski &Associates, Inc. (BGM) for a fee
not to exceed $48,500 to study the sanitary sewers feeding into the Shadow Lane Sanitary Sewer
Outfall.
Staff recommends that the City Council approve the attached agreement.
BACKGROUND:
The attached drawing shows the proposed Shadow Lane Sanitary Sewer Outfall Study area. The
sanitary sewer system in this area services over 500 homes. Over the past 10 years, sanitary
sewer backups and overflows have plagued the down stream portion of the sewer which extends
down Wolf Road and Shadow Lane on down to an interceptor maintained by the Sanitary District
of Decatur. These overflows have caused sewage to be discharged into private homes and into
nearby Steven's Creek. It is paramount that the City aggressively address sanitary sewer
overflows and strive to identify and correct problems as they arise.
City staff proposes to have BGM perform an indepth review of the sanitary sewer system
draining the Shadow Lane area and provide the City with realistic options that can be enacted to
correct the overflow problems being experienced. BGM is a very competent and respected firm
in the field of sanitary sewer design and experience has shown that they will provide an excellent
review of the sanitary sewer system.
