The answers to specific questions are provided in the following paragraphs.
Additionally, both budget and project information provided by the applicants which staff are
recommending for funding is attached to this document. The agencies will also be
present to address any concerns the City Council may have.
1. Three agencies, Big Brother - Big Sister, Easter Seals and Youth with a Positive
Direction are being funded for more than three consecutive years. How are their programs
different in this year?
The program proposed this year by Big Brother - Big Sister is a mentoring program that
will be provided in collaboration with Boys & Girls Club. The previous Big Brother - Big Sister program, School
Buddies, was a school based mentoring program provided to elementary and middle
school students of District#61 and other area schools. Students were referred by teachers
and matched with adult volunteers who talked over questions and concerns, reinforced ',
classroom learning through help with homework, etc. Big Brother - Big Sister was the i
established provider of school-based mentoring for the Macon County Mentoring and '
Tutoring Agencies Network.
The currently proposed program from Easter Sea1s is to provide portable or permanent I
wheel chair ramps, or mobile home hydraulic lifts for moderate to low income persons. I'
This project was also funded in 2001. In FY2000, Easter Seals was funded to supply
durable medical equipment and/or attachable home safety devices to all eligible
