..� ,. <br /> PROJECT DESCRIPTION-MONUMENT RESTORATION <br /> The Historical and Architectural Sites Commission, through a grant provided by Save Outdoor <br /> Sculpture! (SOS!) commissioned assessments of all Decatur sculptures in 2000. Completed in <br /> May, 2000, the Commission is now pursuing monument restoration funds to continue the <br /> beautification effort for Decatur's historic markers and monuments within the community. <br /> As a component of this project, as well as the overall revitalization of Downtown Decatur, <br /> HASC is planning to restore the monuments that anchor Lincoln Square, the center of Decatur. <br /> The two statues represent Abraham Lincoln's first practice in Illinois. One commemorating <br /> "Lincoln's First Political Speech" and the other recognizing "Macon County's First Courthouse" <br /> in which Lincoln first practiced law. <br /> The project will entail a one-time visit from sculpture conservator Andrzej Dajnowski. Mr <br /> Dajnowski has extensive experience in monument, sculpture and public art restoration projects <br /> and will also represent the City of Decatur on another monument restoration project outside of <br /> the National Register Historic District. Mr. Dajnowski will bring a small staff for one day to <br /> clean,remove corrosion and apply protective coatings to the sculptures. He will also clean and <br /> coat the plaques adorning the monuments to protect them from the elements. <br /> The project will involve local media coverage of the activities. The Herald & Review has <br /> recently done two articles on monument restoration and has expressed a commitment to <br /> following this work in the community. <br />
