Swanson, P.E., Director of Engineering & Infrastructure
William A. Ratekin,Assistant City Engineer
SUBJECT: Southtowne Sewer Improvements, City Project 2001-42
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution awarding the
contract for Southtowne Sewer Improvements, City Project 2001-42, to Burdick Plumbing &
Heating Co., Inc., as the lowest, responsible bidder in the amount of $27,655.00, and that the
Mayor be authorized to execute the contract, and the City Clerk to attest.
BACKGROUND:
This spring and summer the City contracted with Bodine Services to increase the size of the
sanitary sewer line extending from the Fisherman's Wharf Pump Station to Southland Drive.
This work was accomplished through pipe bursting which increased the diameter of the sewer
from 10 inches to 14 inches to significantly increase capacity in this line. The last remaining
"choke point" on this trunk line is a 10 inch segment running from Rt. 51 into the back lot of the
Southtowne shopping center (see the attached map).
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is actively working toward letting a project to
rebuild Rt. 51 from just north of the lake south to Elwin. It is staff's intention to complete the
final segment in this trunk line prior to IDOT's proposed work.
This work is necessary to maintain and sustain the integrity of the City's sanitary sewer system
and its ability to serve the residents in the South Shores area of the City.
The project specifications were prepared by the Engineering Division. The project was
advertised on August 22, 2001 and bids were opened on September 11, 200L The results of the
letting are as follows (bid tabulation attached):
