Quandt,E.I.T., Civil Engineer I'G
SUBJECT: Hickorywood Storm Sewer Outfall, City Project 9932
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution awarding the
contract for the Hickorywood Storm Sewer Outfall, City Project 9932, to Entler Excavating Co.,
Inc., as the lowest, responsible bidder in the amount of $138,806.00, and that the Mayor be
authorized to execute the contract, and the City Clerk to attest.
BACKGROUND:
Residents in the neighborhood lying generally north of Hickorywood Drive and east of Martin
Luther King, Jr. Drive (refer to attached location map) have complained in the past about
flooding problems from the overtopping of MLK from heavy storm runoff. This flooding has
been the result of blockages to the intake structure on the east side of MLK from cornstalks or
other field crop residue. The problem is compounded because the twin 48-inch diameter storm
sewer pipes beginning at MLK and ending at Crescent Drive empty into a single 48-inch
diameter sewer pipe.
At the time that MLK was improved, the extension of the 48-inch pipes beyond Crescent Drive
was not completed because of easement issues which could not be resolved in a timely manner.
The design was recently completed by staff and the necessary easements obtained. The project
will include the installation of twin 48-inch pipes, grade the area, and riprap the outfall.
The project plans and specifications were prepared by City staff. The project was advertised
June 20, 2001, and bids were opened on July 9, 2001. The results for the letting are as follows:
