COUNCIL COMMUNICATION FORM
PURCHASING & INTERNAL SERVICES MEMOR.ANDUM
#O1 - 44
June 27, 2001
TO: Honorable Mayor Howley and City Council
FROM: Steve Garman, City Manager
Beth Couter, Financial ManagemPnt Director
Deborah M. Perry,Purchasing Supervisor
SUBJECT: Bids for tree and bush removal
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends awarding contract to Romer 'I
Brothers Inc. to furnish tree and bush removal along William Street Bridge. '
BACKGROUND: This bid consists of the removal of trees and bushes as well as herbicide I
application to deter future vegetation growth. A similar project was done along the Route 36
bridge earlier this year.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION: Staff have met with several Cove Court lakefront homeowners.
The back of their properties face north toward the William Street bridge embankment. The
homeowners concerns about the loss of vegetative screening from William Street motor vehicle
traffic have been minimized, since the trees and brush directly across the lake from their homes is
not being removed. The minimum distance between these homes and the area where the trees
and brush will be removed are from 167 to 233 yards.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Water Management requested the work be done and
wrote the bid specification. They recommend approval of bid.
STAFF REFERENCE: Deborah M. Perry, Purchasing Supervisor, 424-2762, Keith
Alexander, Water Management Director, 424-2863. Keith Alexander will be at the council
meeting to answer any questions the council may have about this purchase.
BUDGET: $23,587.20 from Water Fund.
