   . ,
DEPARTMENT OF WATER MANAGEMENT
Memorandum No. 2001-18
June 11, 2001 I
I
TO: Honorable Mayor Howley and City Council ,
FROM: Steve Garman, City Manager I,
John A. Smith, Assistant City Manager for Public Services I
Keith D. Alexander, Director of Water Management ja I
iv
SUBJECT: ,
Lake Decatur Sedimentation Surveys. '
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: I!
Staff recommends that Council adopt the attached Resolution authorizing an agreement for the ,
Illinois State Water Survey to conduct a sedimentation survey of the Big Creek and Sand Creek ',
Basins of Lake Decatur. '
BACKGROUND:
Attached are copies of the pertinent pages of the recently completed Sedimentation Survey of '
Lake Decatur's Basin 6 by the Illinois State Water Survey. The survey indicates that the basin 'I
has lost 48% (1,346 acre feet) of its original water storage capacity due to sedimentation. The ',
Basin 6 dredging project, scheduled to begin late next year, will remove all of this accumulated '
sediment, and more,by dredging 1,500 acre feet of lake bottom. ,
The Big Creek and Sand Creek areas of the Lake are scheduled to be dredged immediately after I
Basin 6, beginning in 2006 and 2010 respectively. As in the Basin 6 project, an accurate survey
of the volume of sediment in these areas is required for planning purposes. The remaining areas !
of the Lake also need to be surveyed since they have not been done since 1983. At the request of '
i Staff, the Illinois State Water Survey has submitted a proposal and agreement (administered by
the University of Illinois, copies attached) for accomplishing this work in 2001 and 2002. ',
POTENTIAL OBJECTION:
None anticipated. 'i
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: '
Illinois State Water Survey ',
Homer L.
