Project Description
An intensive survey of portions of the West End Neighborhood (approximately 350 properties)
will be conducted to identify and document all historic resources in the neighborhood. All
structures are to be surveyed, including post-1949 buildings. This survey will identify individual
structures that qualify for the National Register of Historic Places, or for designation as Local
Landmarks, and determine areas that qualify as National Register or Locally Designated Historic
Districts. (This neighborhood is not currently identified as a National Register or as a locally
designated district.)
Each resource will have an inventory form (Illinois Urban Architectural and Historical Survey)
completed with a building description, construction date, any physical changes, historical
information, as well as the National Register/Local designation evaluation. A completion report
meeting the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency's standards will be submitted. The report
should include a historic context of the survey area explaining the important patterns in the
development of the neighborhood and a description of the various characteristics that give the
area its identity.
Portions of this neighborhood surveyed in 1995 and 1998; survey reports are available in the
Economic and Urban Development Department or in the Decatur Public Library.
The survey area in the West End Neighborhood is as follows: East and West Court Manor Place,
Edgewood Court and Victoria Avenue between West Main Street and Fairview Park; the area
bound by South Linden Avenue, West Forest Avenue, Dennis Avenue and West Main Street; and
West Decatur Street and West Forest Street from South Fairview Avenue to South Westlawn
Avenue. A map of the area is included.
