Ceno Gordo
An itein on the agenda for the meeting of January 8, 2001 is a resolution authorizing
action regarding the removal of debris from a collapsed structure.
The structure, located at 540 E. Cerro Gordo, had been a court ordered demolition. Bids
were received and were in the review/evaluation process. However, before staff was able
to provide a recommendation to Council, the building was destroyed by fire.
It was subsequently determined by structural engineers that the remains were in imminent
danger of further collapse. This condition presented a threat to vehicular and pedestrian
traffic on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and restricted the use of the main rails for
Norfolk& Southern railroad which is immediately to the north of the structure.
The Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) advised that a11 materials had to be
considered contaminated and as such required specialized disposal. Therefore staff
promptly re-bid the project.
There were 5 bids, with the low bid coming from Entler Excavating Company, Inc. for
$144,250.00. Entler Excavating was given an authorization to proceed because ofthe
immediate nature of this project.
Once the information was received from the EPA regarding special requirements for the
proper handling of hazardous material associated with the removal, this information was
relayed to the contractor.
Staff recommends approval.
