EXCERPTS OF THE
MINUTES OF THE MEETING
OF THE
TRAFFIC AND PARKING COMMISSION
Wednesday, November 12, 2003
Engineering Conference Room
Second Fioor, Civic Center
Item#1 Request for stop signs at the intersections of Ellen Avenue and Cushing Street
There have been 7 recorded accidents at this intersection over the past three years, all which are
potentially correctable with stop signs. Newell stated that Ellen Avenue is tfie only northbound
exit from Colonial Mall and traffic is fairly heavy for this reason. The accident rate for this
intersection show that yield signs established at this intersection approximately 13 years ago have
not been beneficial.
Don Wennecker asked if an all way stop would be a better solution to the accident problem than
the two way stop that staff has recommended.
April Veteto suggested that an all way stop might be more noticeable than a two way stop. Both
streets carry close to the same volume of traffic.
Newell said staff would not be opposed to an all way stop, however, typically it is an option that
is worked up to.
Kretsinger asked if the neighborhood citizens normally complained after the installation of stop
signs.
Newell responded that the area residents find the stop signs beneficial.
Kretsinger suggested that a two way stop be installed first.
Newell stated if the two way stop doesn't solve the problem within a year the Commission can
always go back and revisit the issue.
It was moved and seconded (Kretsinger / Wennecker) to follow staff recommendation. Motion
carried unanimously.
