Revised 5/19/2003
DECATUR CATHOLIC CHARITIES
RENOVATION OF 239 WEST PRAIRIE STREET
SCOPE OF WORK NARRATIVE
Following is a narrative of the intended scope of work to renovate this existing building
for office space and community services for the Decatur Catholic Charities. Previously,
the building was utilized as a Funeral Home. This building consists of exterior masonry
load-bearing walls with wood floor and roof inembers. The interior finishes include
plaster walls and ceilings, acoustical tile ceilings, carpet, and vinyl flooring. The
windows and doors are wood single pane with wood mullions.
The scope of work to the exterior of the building will include patching the roof, replacing
window glazing putty as required, repairing the wood window sashes and frames to
match the existing where needed, painting the wood doors and windows, removing the
canvas awnings and frames, replacing closer and lockset on front and rear entrance doors,
and replacing the side entrance double door with a single door and sidelight.
The existing side entrance is a pair of double doors. They are wood doors with divided
lites. The total width of the doors is 5'-0". Opening the active leaf provides a 28" clear
opening. This side door provides the most direct route to the various public spaces within
the building from the parking and serves as an egress for the building. Also, this door is
the only exterior door at grade. The proposed alteration would replace the double door
with a single 36" door and a sidelight within the existing frame. The new door and
sidelight would be wood with true divided lites to match the existing. This will allow the
door to meet the building code and accessibility requirements (32" clear opening is
required for egress and accessibility). The architectural significance of this building is
the front faade.
The interior scope of work will include the demolition of walls and single bathroom for
the construction of separate accessible men's and women's restrooms, demolition of a
few walls adjacent to the previous visitation room to allow for the creation of clothing
store/distribution room. In addition, new carpeting will be installed, plaster walls and
ceilings will be repaired, all walls will be painted, the remaining plaster ceilings will be
painted, and the kitchen cabinets will be replaced. The heating and air conditioning
equipment and ductwork will be replaced. The water and sanitary pipes will be replaced.
Electrical outlets and switches will be updated. Emergency lighting and exit signs will be
added.
