'
rP g
 • 1995: Mazquee refurbished and projectors, speaker system, and Cinema Scope ,
Screen were purchased from Rogers Theatre of Decatur, IL. ,
Name of architect: Charles Aschauer of Aschauer& Waggoner of Decatur, IL. This '
local azchitect also designed several other prominent buildings including the Staley !,
Building in Decatur(1929) and Blessed Sacrament School and Convent in Springfield '
(1933). ,,
Construction materials: two foot thick gypsum fire proof walls, brick walls, terra cotta I
adornments, box office, tile wall coverings, and fiber glass and metal marquee. ,
Description of unique architectural elements: Fiberglass and metal theatre marquee,
mezzanine level, terra cotta adornments, and tile wall coverings. ;
Alterations or additions to building: New marquee in 1951. The second floor office
space above the entrance in 1960 due to a fire.
Missing or removed architectural features: The loss of decorative windows and terra
cotta designs on the second story burnt in a fire that included smiling and saddened
masks symbolizing comedy and tragedy.
Description of building elements:
Exterior-Front: The front of the building that faces North Main Street is a one
story building with a recessed storefront with four sets of aluminum and glass
doors. Angled in from the building line are glass display cases on both sides.
Surrounding the doors and display cases is blue enameled metal sheeting.
Stainless steel bands are located at seems and azound the edges of the display
cases and doors. Protruding from the building is a stainless steal and ceramic
trapezoid shaped marquee that has roughly 1,000 light bulbs. Also visible from
North Main Street is a wall of the theater behind the series of storefronts along the
street. The wall runs the length of the theater and is approximately five stories on
the southern side where the stage azea is located and about four stories on the
northern side where the balcony is located located. However, it is important to
note that the one story commercial buildings cover the first level of the wall. The
wall is constructed of red bricks that cover the two-foot firewall. The southern
third of the wall, which is the ta.11er portion, is simply pla.in brick with no design
features. However, shorter northern two-thirds of the building has three strips of
brick bands that run from the top to the bottom of the walls.
3
