LiNCOLN SQUARE THEATRE
brief use, the theater again went unused until another not-for-profit group; Lincoln
Square Theatre, Inc. was formed in 1989.
The Lincoln Square Theatre, Inc. group was formed by numerous citizens who were
again dedicated to restore the theater and return it to the center of social and cultural
scene in Decatur. Since the formation of this group, they have worked hard to bring life
back into the theater and it has been the scene for various shows and plays by community
groups and organizations. While restoration of the iheater is far from complete, the
group's hard work is seen through continual improvements that have helped secure the
building from further deteriorations. Also, the owner of the Adult Book& Cinema
donated the building to the building to the north that housed the Adult Book& Cinema,
to the Lincoln Square T'heatre, Inc in 1996. The intention of the group is to use the main
level of that building for an expanded lobby and concession area and the upper level for a
reception hall. Most recently, the group secured 1980's pop star, Rick Springfield, to
perform a benefit concert at an azea hotel. The money raised from the concert was to be
used for the restoration process. In honor of this deed, the balcony of the theater was
named the Rick Springfield Balcony on October 20, 2001.
Contezt
The Lincoln Square Theatre and the IOOF Hall is located in the heart of Decatur's
Downtown and a contributing part of the National Register of Historic Places Downtown
Historic District. The building was the first large-scale vaudeville theater constructed in
Decatur. Also adding to its significance is that while other theaters followed the pathway
of the Lincoln Square Theatre into Decatur, the majority of the movie houses that graced
Decatur have since disappeared from the scene including the Empress Theatre, Rodger's ',
Theatre, the Drive In,the Outdoor, the Strand, the Bond, and the Alhambra. Thus, the 'I
Lincoln Square Theatre and the Avon Theatre the only remaining historic theatres in I
Decatur. ,
Property Owner Information: I
Lincoln Square Theatre, Inc.
Contact name: Katherine Wiggins I
131 N Main Street
Decatur, IL 62523
(217) 422-1711
DeVidal,Jasper P.
