Macon Place Historic District Designation
June 18, 2001
Page Two
A letter of nonsupport for the designation of Macon Place as a Historic District was received.
Some stated concerns in the letter were: the depletion of diverse cultures in the neighborhood;
the use of city code violations in a negative manner; and the gentrification of the area. Section
7B of Chapter 31 of the City Code states that testimony regarding the local designation should
address the required criteria for designation. The expressed concerns in the letter do not pertain
to the criteria for designation. The designation of a local historic district, as previously seen in
the Near West Historic District, has little or no effect on the diversity of the area, code
enforcement or the gentrification of the neighborhood. The designation does require
homeowners to plan for any proposed changes to the exterior of the structure.
Inasmuch as designation can be a tool to facilitate reinvestment in the area, no conflict exists
with the current comprehensive plan and eligibility has been securely established, I recommend
approval of this petition and believe that designation will ultimately enhance the area.
