TRAFFIC AND PARKING COMMISSION
Wednesday, April l lth, 2001
Engineering&Infrastructure Conference Room
Third Floar, Civic Center
ITEM#4 Staff request for an all way stop at the intersection of McClellan Avenue and
Wood Street.
Matt Newell advised that he had received an e-mail from the principal of Dennis School
expressing his concerns regarding the congestion around the school and the potential danger to
the children at the intersection of McClellan Avenue and Wood Street. The sight distance is
generally poor through the intersection. There have been 4 recorded accidents at this intersection
over the past 3 years, 3 of which are potentially correctable with an all way stop. For the same
time period, the accident rate for this intersection is 1.30 accidents per million vehicles entering
the intersection. This rate is slightly lower than the expected rate of 1.5 accidents per million
vehicles. Speeds through this subject intersection are somewhat high at approximately 31 mph
for the east-west movement.
Considering nearby Dennis School and the congestion that accompanies it, staff does not see the
potential of reducing the accident rate without added traffic control. Staff recommends the
placement of an all way stop at the intersection of McClellen Avenue and Wood Street.
It was moved and seconded (Ballard/Stewart) to accept staff recommendations that an all way
stop be placed at the intersection of McClellan Avenue and Wood Street. There being no
opposition, the motion carried.
