ECONOMIC AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT MEMORANDUM
No. 00-121
July 25, 2000
TO: Mayor Terry M. Howley and City Council Members
FROM: Steve Garm ity Manager
A.J. Krieger, ssistan City Manager
Dane Bragg, anner
RE: Special Use Permit for a Communications Tower at 417 West Wood Street
The petitioner is requesting a special use permit to replace an existing communications tower
with a new tower at its facility located at 417 West Wood Street. The proposed tower would be
located on the northeast corner of the existing building and would be set approximately 43 feet
from the front property line. The tower will be attached to the building with no exterior
equipment shelters.
The tower will be of tripod design measuring approximately four feet in width on each vertical
side with lattice support and will have a height of 61'9". A fence will be provided to prevent
climbing of the tower. Fall zone provisions are acceptable and do not pose a threat to pedestrians
or vehicles in the right-of-way. The proposed driveway within the fall zone is not for public use.
Staff finds the petitioner's proposal to be acceptable and recommends approval of the petition
provided that a fence enclosure measuring 10 feet in vertical height is provided around the base
of the proposed tower.
The Decatur City Plan Commission voted unanimously to recommend approval of this petition
with the contingency of a 10 foot fence being provided. Minutes of the meeting are attached.
