EXCERPTS FROM
MINUTES OF THE MEETING
OF THE
TRAFFIC AND PARKING COMMISSION
Wednesday, March 8, 2000
ITEM#2 Request to remove paxking from the west side of the 1200 block of Florida Avenue.
Newell received a petition to remove parking from Mrs. Newingham and has talked with her on
the phone. Staff recommends that parking be removed from the west side of the 1200 block of
Florida Avenue in accordance with the Petition. The west side was chosen by the petitioner.
The residents of other streets use parking on this street. When cars are parked on both sides of
the street, it is difficult to drive down the street between them.
Nordholm believes that people in the entire neighborhood should be informed of these meetings.
Newell advised that the residents on Carter Avenue and Virginia Place were not notified of this
meeting. For parking restrictions, the unwritten policy is that the wishes are granted to the
people on the street where the parking is being removed. Newell advised that traditionally
parking concerns are decided by the people living on the street because they should be able to
determine who can park on their street.
Gillen stated that this problem should have been addressed a long time ago because of the
problems getting a fire truck down the street or into the neighborhood in general.
Alice Woodrum, 1246 Florida Avenue, stated that Mrs. Newingham could not attend the meeting
because she had to work. Mostly older people live on this street, and some of them have no
choice but to park on the street. There are landscape timbers along a portion of the side of the
road so people park far away from the edge, making it even narrower. This is also a dead end '
street. She does not know why other people should to park on their street when they can park on '
their own street. They sometimes leave vehicles on her street for several days. ,
Sober agrees that the people who live on the street should be able to determine who can park on I
their street, and the City should probably have taken parking off the street long ago.
Ryan agrees this sounds like a safety issue, whether it is a request of the neighborhood or not.
Nordholm feels the Commission has a responsibility to inform the citizens of the area what is
going on.
