Williams, Jr., City Manager `
Bruce A. McNabb P.E., Director of Public Works
Matthew C. Newell P.E., Traffic Engineer G yl
SUBJECT: Class II Truck Route
An item on the agenda for the City Council Meeting to be held on September 7, 1999, is
an ordinance designating 21 st Street between Olive and Condit Streets as a Class II truck route.
Designation as a Class II truck route will allow the routine passage of up to 80,000 lb. trucks.
Currently, unless otherwise prohibited, City streets allow up to 73,280 lb. trucks. The attached
map shows the existing Class II streets that are under the City's jurisdiction along with the
currently proposed street.
Staff has proposed the current addition to the City's truck route system in order to obtain
State truck route funding for two projects aimed at improving 21st Street to accommodate Class
II trucks. The first project will be to improve the intersection of Locust and 21st streets. The
second project, currently proposed for Spring of 2000, will be to overlay the surface of 21st
Street from Garfield Avenue to Condit Street.
21 st Street is a logical route to connect Garfield Avenue with a new intermodal freight
terminal being operated in the Norfolk& Southern railroad yard south of Condit Street.
City staff will be present to answer questions of the Council.
