f.Df ca
c
V 7s
'[LINO`'
December 15, 1998
PUBLIC WORKS MEMORANDUM
NO. 98 - 85
MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: James L. Williams, 7r., City Manager
Bruce A. McNabb, Director of Public Works g
Matthew C. Newell, Traffic Engineer u"f
SUBJECT: Ordinance Authorizing the Establishment of a Traffic Circle
at the intersection of Macon and Edward Streets
At the October meetin of the Traic and Parking Commission, the Commission approved a
request from Macon Place residents to recommend the installation of a traffic circle at the
intersection of Macon and Edward Streets.
A traffic circle is a device that is designed to reduce traffic speeds and volumes on a street by
placing a circular obstacle in the intersection. This obstacle will require vehicles to reduce speed
in order to safely negotiate the intersection. Additionally, the circle will give the impression of the
street not being open to through tra.ffic, thereby potentially reducing traffic volumes.
As with some other traffic improvements, staff will initially install the traffic circle on a
temporary basis. If successful, staff will propose a capital project to place a more permanent
installation at a later date.
Staff will be present to answer any questions the Council may have.
attach: 3
