:o.DEC
. G
V o

%[LINOS
Apri130, 1997
PUBLIC WORKS MEMORANDUM
NO. 97-46
MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: James L. Williams,Jr., City Manager
Bruce A. McNabb,P.E.,Director of Public Works
Matthew C. Newell, P.E., Traffic Engineer u
SUBJECT: Macon Place Street Closures
An item on the agenda for the City Council meeting of Monday, May 5, 1997, is a
modification of Ordinance No. 95-63, moving the current a11ey closure, adjacent to 324 and 340
South Monroe Street, to the east approximately 65 feet. This request is supported by the Macon
Place and NWRAPS neighborhoods and was approved by the City's Traffic and Parking
Commission at its April meeting. Excerpts from the minutes are attached hereto.
On November 20, 1995, the City Council authorized the closure of various streets and
alleys in the Macon Place neighborhood as part of a Crime Prevention Through Environmental
Design (CPTED) project. These closures were carried out on February 14, 1996, at the locations
provided on the attached map. These closures were installed with the active support of the
Macon Place and NWRAPS neighborhoods.
The Macon Place neighborhood conducted a neighborhood meeting in April 1997,
wherein City staff presented crime and trc statistics relative to the CPTED project.
Essentially, crime statistics remained the same and traffic volumes were reduced significantly
throughout the neighborhood. Neighborhood residents are in favor of the closures and with the
changes that they have brought about in the area.
Staff will be available to answer any questions the City Council may have.
attach: 3
cc: Richard A.
