POPULATION & REAL ESTATE TYES
Population
As stated in the introduction, the population of Decatur gradually increased
for a period of 80 years between 1900 and 1980. However, the City's population
decreased over the subsequent 10 year period, declining to a population of 83,885
people in 1990.
Obviously, this was an alaiming trend that could not be allowed to continue.
It is vital to keep the population of Decatur stable, as the City's population
deteimuies the share of Illinois income tax and motor fuel tax retumed to the City.
In addition, a declining population means a reduction in local sales of homes,
automobiles and consumer goods as well as a reduced school population.
, The following graph illustrates the population for the City of Decatur
between 1900 and 1990:
City of Decatur
Population - 1900-1990
,00.00a I J — - ----
80.000 ----- - - -- -
_------_________ _ __ _ _E
,000 ________ _ __ _ __ __ _,
__ _______ __ _ __ _ __ _ _
,a  _ ____ __ __ _ __ __ __ ;
za,a -- _ - ___ __ - _- — _ -_
a , __ _ - = __ _ _ __ _ _;
1900 1910 1920 1930 1940 1550 1950 1970 1580 1990
Population
g
