- s
EXCERPTS FROM
TRAFFIC&PARKING COMMITTEE MEETING
DECEMBER, 1994
ITEM#2 Ordinance requesting that a stop sign be put up facing Lawrence at 17th.
Newell stated that a traffic count and a speed study were conducted at this intersection. Speeds were
normal for a residential neighborhood, and the traffic was light. He does not believe the area is used by
anyone other than residents. There have been two accidents at this intersection over the past three years,
which is well above the expected number on a street carrying this volume of traffic. The sight distance is
not the best because the roads feeding into it are all sloping away, and the sight distance is deceptive.
Based on the accident rate and the poor sight distance, staff recommends installing stop signs facing
Lawrence, which has the lower traffic volume. Almost all intersections in that neighborhood have some
sort of control, being a stop or yield sign. In this neighborhood, 17th is as through a street as there is.
Ripley believes the sight distance alone warrants a stop sign. Schultz agrees.
It was moved and seconded (Plotner/Moss) to accept staff recommendation to install stop signs facing
Lawrence Street. There being no one opposed, the motion carried.
