Richard Ryan f
cc: Steve Garman and Chief Mowen
Date: Tuesday, November 14, 2000 i
Subject: Rep. Julie Curry Grant to DPD
Approximately two months ago Rep. Julie Curry learned of the Deparirnent's
need for a ballistic shield capable of defeating high powered firearm ammunition. She
agreed to provide, through a grant administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce
and Community Affairs, the funds to purchase one shield to address that need.
The Decatur Police Departrnent currently utilizes ballistic shields during high risk
operations to provide protection for officers and to facilitate high risk rescue operations.
Weapons encountered by police during some of those operations today require a higher
level of protection for the officers than is provided by the in-service shields. The NATO
III+ shield to be purchased with the money provided by the grant will provide for that
enhanced protection for those officers.
City stafF recommends approval of the attached resolution.
Attachment
