• Facade Rehabilitation Program - The City of Decatur sponsored a facade rehabilitation
program to encourage downtown business owners to remove old steel facades and renovate
the historic storefronts in the downtown area. The program encompassed four square blocks
and achieved restoration of all facades but one in the program area. Approximate cost:
$200,000
• Tax Increment Finance(TIF) District/Urban Design - The Economic and Urban
Development Department is currently overseeing an $18 million dollar redevelopment
project in the Downtown,Near West and Millikin University areas. This project involves the
generation of new commercial activity, restoration of historic homes and buildings, and the
creation of special residential and entertainment/cultural districts.
The City of Decatur has dedicated over$7,500 to the restoration of the Stephen Decatur
monument through the general fund. It is the goal of the City Council to completely rehabilitate
its tribute to Commodore Stephen Decatur. The City of Decatur plans to have the sculpture and
columns completely rehabilitated by August 1, 2001.
Maintenance is considered of utmost importance to the City of Decatur. Therefore, the City will
commission Andrzej Dajnowski, Conservation of Sculpture and Objects Studio, to prepare and
implement an annual maintenance plan for the sculpture and columns. Budget funds for
maintenance ($5,000 annually) have already been dedicated from the general fund for all
sculptures within the City of Decatur's jurisdiction.
