Decatur-June,2000-CSOS Inc.
At the present time conservators of outdoor bronzes use two kinds of
coatings: combination of microcrystalline waxes, or Incralac - an acrylic resin in
organic solvents with BTA - a corrosion inhibitor added. Both of the coatings
require maintenance. A wac coating has to be maintained at least once a year
(approximate cost of an annual maintenance for the bronze is $1,600.00 to
$2,000.00). An Incralac coating should be washed and waxed every other year
(approximate cost $800.00), and removed, reapplied after 5 to 10 years
(approximate cost $3,000.00 to $4,000.00). Waxes are easier to maintain, but
Incralac gives better graffiti and weather resistant protection for a bronze. In this
case Incralac and wax are good choices. The decision should be made by the owner
based on the future maintenance program. The hot wax should be considered by
the owner if it can be maintained on annual or biannual basis. A w coating is
more economical because it is easier to maintain.
The above estimate is based on keeping the green color of the sculpture, if the
owner wishes to change the appearance of the monument to brown this approach
will be addressed upon of the request of the owner. In such a case historical
evidence of the original brown appearance should be provided in order to justify this
choice.
