Swanson, P. E., Acting Director of Water Management(
Keith D. Alexander, Lake Manager (
SUBJECT: Lake Decatur Mechanical Dredging
During Low Lake Level Feasibility Study
The Lake Capital Fund includes money in the current fiscal year for the above-referenced
study, which was suggested by City staff in response to Council inquiry as to whether certain
areas of Lake Decatur could be dredged when the lake water level is extremely low. The Council
inquiry occurred late last year as the lake dropped 2.1 feet below its normal level.
In order to examine the Council's request in greater detail, City staff asked Cochran &
Wilken, Inc., the consulting engineering firm that was evaluated second best for the Basin 6
dredging engineering services contract, if they were interested in providing low lake level
dredging feasibility study services.
The enclosed contract and resolution are the result of these negotiations. Cochran &
Wilken, Inc., will provide the following:
1. Conduct sedimentation surveys of the three potential dredge areas identified on the
enclosed map. The areas are commonly referred to as the Staley hot water ditch,
Bayview Cove and Sand Creek south of Grove Road.
2. Obtain and analyze two sediment core samples from each of the three areas.
3. Evaluate potential ingress and egress considerations such as equipment mobilization,
easement acquisition, site preparation, sediment removal, transport and disposal.
