Smith, Acting Director of Water Management <br /> SUBJECT: South Water Treatment Plant Filter Media Capping <br /> City Project 2000-36 <br /> On January 28, 2000, our Water Production operational staff performed anthracite media <br /> depth measurements of the six major filters at the South Water Treatment Plant. The analysis <br /> indicated we had lost approximately 10 to 11 inches of anthracite media from the required total <br /> of 22 inches in each filter. The anthracite media are located on the top of the filter beds and are <br /> used to remove particulate matter from the treated water. Loss of anthracite is caused by <br /> backwashing filters (for cleaning) and replacement after several years of use is a normal <br /> procedure. <br /> On May 24, 2000, the City sent letters to contractors requesting bids for the replacement and <br /> installation of the anthracite media. The letters were sent to the contractors which met the <br /> National Safety Foundation (NSF) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard <br /> 61 for anthracite media for potable water supplies with a deadline of June 30, 2000, for return of <br /> the bids. <br /> The Department of Water Management received three bids. The following bids were <br /> submitted: <br />
