N ell, P.E., Traffic Engineer ,�2P� SUBJECT: Letter of Inte t with the Illinois Department of Transportation to Improve the Intersection of U. S. Route 51 with Ash Avenue An item on the agenda for the March 20, 2000, City Council meeting is the approval of a Letter of Intent between the City of Decatur and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to improve the intersection of U. S. Route 51 with Ash Avenue. This Letter of Intent states the intention of IDOT to contribute up to $652,000 toward the proposed intersection improvement. The total estimated cost of the project is $930,000. This Letter of Intent will be followed by a formal Agreement after July 1, 2000, if construction funding for IDOT is approved and available. The City's approval of the Letter of Intent will enable IDOT to approve the City's proposed construction plans and state the Department's intent to reimburse the City for improvements to U. S. Route 51. Funding for this project is currently proposed for the Fiscal Year 2000-2001 Budget. The proposed construction work will be completed under City Project 9941 which is scheduled for construction during the Summer and Fall of 2000. City Project 9941 will widen Route 51 to enable the addition of a second southbound left turn lane at Ash Avenue. The project will add an additional lane on the south side of Ash Avenue between Route 51 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and add a westbound right turn lane on Ash Avenue at Route 51. The final plans for this project are currently being reviewed by the Federal Highway Administration for final approval. Staff will be present to answer any questions the Council may have. attach: 2
