RESOLUTION NO. R99-195 RE50LUTION REQUESTING FUNDING FOR PLANNING,ENGINEERING,AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE U.S. ROUTE 51 FOUR(4) LANE CONNECTOR ROADWAY BETWEEN DECATUR AND CENTRALIA WHEREAS, the U. S. Route 51 Coalition of Community Leaders seeks funding from the Illinois Department of Transportation for the planning, engineering, and construction of the 107 mile connector roadway to link this highway from Northern to Southern Illinois as a four (4) - Lane Highway; and, WHEREAS, the existing two (2) - lane U. S. 51 Roadway was engineered in the 1920's to outdate highway standards that pose safety concerns and impede our local and regional opportunity for economic and community growth; and, WHEREAS, engineers at the Illinois Department of Transportation estimate the completion of U. S. 51 into a four (4) - Lane Highway for the 107 mile connector between Decatur to Centralia at a cost of$300 million to $385 million; and, WHEREAS, construction of the U. S. 51 four (4) - Lane Highway Corridor wli enhance safety, economic development, and quality of life issues in Central and Southern Illinois, and this transportation improvement activity is complimentary to Governor Ryan's Build Illinois FIRST (Fund For Infrastructure, Roads, Schools, and Transit) Proposal. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS: Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Decatur supports the timely construction of the 107 mile U. S. 51 Four(4) - Lane Connector Highway from Decatur to Centralia Section 2. T'hat the City Clerk be, and she is hereby, authorized and directed to forward a copy of this resolution to Governor George Ryan, Department of Transportation Secretary Kirk Brown, Senator Duane Noiand, and State Representatives Julie Curry and Bill Mitchell.
