changes, continued monitoring in the watershed is highly recommended. A seventh year of <br /> watershed monitoring at the present level is proposed to accomplish this. The addition of a <br /> seventh year of monitoring will enhance the baseline data already gathered thereby 1) developing <br /> a stronger base for attracting future funding for land management and mitigation programs <br /> throughout the watershed and 2) provide the background data needed to determine the progress <br /> of any future best management practices implemented in the watershed. The continuation of the <br /> watershed monitoring has been recommended by several federal, state, and county agencies <br /> (USEPA, IEPA, county Soil&Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) and farm bureaus) as well <br /> as local watershed planning committees such as the Lake Decatur Watershed Planning Committee <br /> and Champaign County Soil&Water Conservation District Water Quality Committee. <br /> PROJECT OBJECTIVES <br /> The main goal of this project is to�continue to assist the City of Decatur comply with the <br /> Letter of Commitment (LOC) agreed upon with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency <br /> (IEPA) by continuing to monitor the watershed for nitrates from May 1999 through April 2000. <br /> To accomplish this goa1,we outline the following objecrives. <br /> 1. Continue to maintain and operate the watershed monitoring network at the <br /> present level. Table 1 lists the present monitoring stations and the sampling schedule proposed. <br /> The Illiriois State Water Survey will maintain the continuous stream recording equipment and the <br /> data records will be processed to determine continuous stream flows. Nitrate-N will continue to <br /> be sampled at all sites and visited weekly. This sampling schedule will provide the data needed <br /> to quantify the amount of nitrates being contributed to Lake Decatur from the watershed. <br /> Table 1.
