. t
f.Df Ca
- C
u s
'/l lINO`'
7uly 22, 1998
PUBLIC WORKS MEMORANDUM
NO. 98 - 45
MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: James L. Williazns, Jr., City Manager
Bruce A. McNabb, Director of Public Works
John A. Smith, Water Production Manager
SUBJECT: Water Quality Action/Response Plan and
Memorandum of Understanding
In 1993, over 400,000 people in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, became ill with diarrhea and several
people died after drinking water contaminated with Cryptosporidium. Since 1993, there have
been other outbreaks including one in Las Vegas, Nevada, which has a state-of-the-art treatment
plant. We do not anticipate such an event in Decatur, and we closely monitor our water supply to
prevent these problems. However, such problems are possible and we must be prepared to
respond, if necessary.
Water and public health officials are increasingly called on to make decisions and provide
information to the public on matters of public health and safety. Attached is a Water Quality
Action/Response Plan designed to help the City, with assistance from the Macon County Health
Department, organize, standardize and streamline the response to a water quality situation that
may affect a large segment of our water consumers. The Plan is a collaborative effort by the City
and the County to protect the health and safety of water consumers and keep the public informed
during those times when drinking water quality could be or is compromised.
A Memorandum of Understanding between the City and the Macon County Health
Department, which outlines our respective responsibilities, is also attached. The Memorandum
has been signed by the Director of the County Health Department.
