WATER QUALITY ACTION/RESPONSE PLAN
A comprehensive action/response plan will help to organize, standardize
and streamline our response to a possible finding of Cryptosporidium or other
contaminant in the potable water as well as to ensure that all proper groups,
agencies, and the public are notified and kept informed of events and decisions.
1. Water Production and/or Macon County Health Department(MCHD) detects a
water quality "trigger event".
• A "trigger event" is a situation or situations involving potable water quality
that requ.ires the water supplier(the City of Decatur) and the public health
agency (Macon County Health Department) to work together to protect
the health of the public. These trigger events may include:
A. Violation of the Total Coliform Rule or the Surface Water Treatment Rule
turbidity standard;
B. A water filtration breakdown or other such water treatment problem;
C. An unusual number of customer complaints about water quality;
D. A laboratory finding of pathogens in finished water, '
E. Significant interruption in key water treatment or monitoring; or
F. An increased reporting of diarrheal illness or cryptosporidiosis cases to
the MCHD that indicates a possible drinking water source. i
2. Water Production Manager(WPM) or his designee and MCID representative
evaluate trigger event:
• Discuss the incident findings and all relevant information
• Determine if further information is needed to analyze event thoroughly.
• Summarize data in a clear and concise ma.nner.
• Send concise summary and recommend response/action plan to
Executive Group for approval. Executive Group consists of Public
Works Director and/or City Manager for the City, Director of MCHD
or his designee for the Health Department. Four possible responses:
A. Health risk no longer suspected.
B. Health risk indeterminate.
C. Health risk suspected.
D. Health risk strongly suspected.
• Executive Group approves response/action plan.
1
