,' -+
•DECa
C
V 7e
I '[LINOS
July 1, 1998
PUBLIC WORKS MEMORANDUM
NO. 98 - 42
MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: James L. Williams,Jr., City Manager /
Bruce A. McNabb,P. E., Director of Public Works'
Stephen P. Swanson,P. E., City Engineer\J'
SUBJECT: FY 1998- 1999 Motor Fuel Taz Resolution
The Motor Fuel T (NT) funds allocated to the local agencies are administered by the
Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The local agency must approve a resolution that
establishes the scope of work and appropriates MFT funds for the project. IDOT will review the
resolution to determine that adequate funding is available and that the scope of work is an
allowable MFT expenditure. They will approve the appropriation of the MFT funds if these two
conditions are deternuned to be satisfactory.
The City's Engineering Division has prepared the Municipal Estimate of Maintenance Cost
for the Fiscal Year 1998 - 1999 contracted street maintenance program funded with MFT funds.
The preliminary cost estimate for this year's contracted street maintenance program has been
prepared to be within the City's allocated MFT funds. The contracted street maintenance
program includes two basic types of pavement resurfacing. The first type is essentially placing a
new pavement surface directly over the existing pavement. The second type involves milling the
existing surface to remove a buildup of previous overlays and then placing a new pavement
surface over the milled surface. This work is done to extend the life of the roadway and improve
the ride quality.
