. .
O•Df c'
a
C
u s
'/[LINO`'
June 25, 1998
PUBLIC WORKS MEMORANDUM
NO. 98 - 41
MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: James L. Williams, Jr., City Manager
Bruce A. McNabb, Director of Public Works
SUBJECT: State Grant for Nitrate Control in Water System
As you are probably aware, the State Budget for 1998-99 includes a $500,000 grant to the
City of Decatur to assist with the control of nitrate in our water system. At this time, it appears
that these funds will be used for the design and partial construction of a blending system to reduce
nitrate concentrations in water produced at the South Water Treatment Plant. However, the final
disposition of these funds will depend on the results of preliminary engineering and approval of
our Nitrate Control Plan by the Illinois EPA. The project description for the grant is attached.
No matching funds are required.
The grant does require that the City designate an individual to sign the grant application and
supporting documents. The attached resolution will authorize the City Manager to sign these
documents.
attach.: 2
cc: State Sen. Kevin Kehoe
Beth B. Couter
