Williams,Jr., City Manager
Bruce A. McNabb,P.E., Director of Public Works
Stephen P. Swanson, P.E., City Engineerc'
SUBJECT: Annual New Sidewalk Program
City Project 9621
The City's Annual New Sidewalk Program was established to construct sidewalks in
developed areas where it has been determined there is a need and sidewalks do not cunently exist.
Two locations were selected by the Engineering Division for this year's program. The first
location is along the west side of Jasper Street beginning at the entrance to 7asper Trailer Park
and extending north to the main entrance into the K-Mart Shopping Center. The second location
is along the south side of Hubbard Avenue beginning at Woodford Street and extending east to
Macon Resources, Inc. A locale map is attached for your reference.
The Division's selection of the locations for this year's program involved reviewing requests
received by the office for sidewalks, the needs identified in the City's 1992 Sidewalk Policy and
Plan prepared by the Community Development Department and the available budget. The
requests received for the Jasper sidewalk noted the worn footpath between the trailer park and the
shopping center as evidence for the need of a sidewalk. The Hubbard sidewalk was requested to
provide a safe path for individuals working or serviced by Macon Resources, Inc. (MRI) who
regularly walk to MRI from Woodford Street. These individuals will, a majority of the time, opt
to walk within the roadway along the gutter and not on the area behind the curb.
Review of the 1992 Plan determined that both locations are identified as needed links in the
City's sidewalk system. The Division's field review of these two locations confirmed that the need
exists for these two sidewalks. The decision was made to proceed with both of these projects this
year.
