' ' . .
 •
monitoring ha.s been recommended by several federal, state, and county agencies (USEPA, IEPA,
county Soil & Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) and farm bureaus) as well as local
watershed planning committees such as the Lake Decatur Watershed Planning Committee and
Champaign County Soil & Water Conservation District Water Quality Committee.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The main goal of this project is to continue to assist the City of Decatur comply with the
Letter of Commitment (LOC) agreed upon with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency
(IEPA) by continuing to monitor the watershed for nitrates from May 1996 through April 1997.
To accomplish this goal, we outline the following objectives.
1. Continue to maintain and operate the watershed monitoring network at a
reduced level. Table 1 lists the present monitoring stations and the sampling schedule
proposed. The Illinois State Water Survey will maintain the continuous stream recording
equipment and the data records will be processed to determine continuous stream flows. Nitrate-
N will continue to be sampled at all sites and visited weekly. This reduced sampling schedule
will still allow for the monitoring of nitrates being contributed by the watershed.
Table 1. Monitoring Stations and Sampling Frequency in the Lake Decatur Watershed.
Drainage
Station area Sampling
number Location (sq mi) Frequency*
101 Long/Big Creek at Twin Bridge Road 46.2 W
102 Friends Creek at Rte 48 near Argenta 111.9 W
103 Goose Creek near DeLand 45.1 W
104 Camp Creek near White Heath 47.2 W
105 Sangamon River near Mahomet 368.2 W
106 Big Ditch near Fisher 38.2 W
111 Sangamon River at Monticello 543.4 W
112 Sangamon River at Fisher 245.6 W
* W - weekly sampling visits and collect only nitrate samples
2. Process and analyze fourth year of data collection. The fourth year of data will be
processed for water discharge (flow), nitrate concentrations, and nitrate loading for all eight
stations in the monitoring network. All four years will be appended and analyzed to determine
any changes in flow and nitrates over time.
3. Public education. Assist the City of Decatur in public education by presenting the
results of the data collection efforts at public and community meetings throughout the watershed.
3
