' F Ecy' DECATUR, ILLINOIS
c
v Lake Shore Driue Relocation Study
' «

 CHAPTER 2 ALTERNATIVE DEVELOPMENT
, Conceptual Development Guidelines
The first purpose of this study is to identify alternatives for the modification of Lake Shore Drive
which are consistent with the redevelopment guidelines identified in the previous studies. The Lake
Decatur Area Development Study identified four liabilities of Lake Shore Drive as it related to the
Conceptual Development Guidelines for infrastructure.
 • Freeway-like interchange at U.S. 51 and Lake Shore Drive.
• Heavy traffic on Lake Shore Drive, including trucks
, • Lack of sidewalks on Lake Shore Drive
• Barrier effect of Lake Shore Drive
The Conceptual Development Guidelines for infrastructure improvements suggested the following
 as desirable objectives.
• Remove the U.S.51 and Lake Shore Drive interchange.
, • Reduce total traffic demand on Lake Shore Drive.
 • Remove truck traffic from Lake Shore Drive.
• Relocate Lake Shore Drive away from the shore line adjacent to Mueller Park.
 • Provide a pedestrian and bicycle link between Lincoln Park,Mueller Park and Chandler Park.
 Identification of Alternatives
Several alternative relocations of Lake Shore Drive and redesignations of Illinois Route 105 were
identified in the context of the Conceptual Development Guidelines objectives for infrastructure
improvements. Although each of the alternatives met the objectives to varying degrees, they also
1 produced different traffic impacts, social impacts, and incurred different implementation costs, each
of which will be presented in a later section of the study report. The alternatives developed for
consideration are briefly described in the following paragraphs along with an evaluation of whether
or not they met the infrastructure objectives. Those alternatives requiring realignment of Lake Shore
Drive have been conceptually illustrated in Figures 2-1 through 2-7.

 Bucher, Willis FRatliff-3
1'\WiOTWi'C\REI'OR15\REI'ORT WP6
