Bacon, Jr., City Manager
Bruce A. McNabb, Director of Public Works`'
William A. Ratekin, Assistant City Engineer
SUBJECT: Sidewalk Curb Ramps
City Project 9437
As required by Federal regulations in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the City of
Decatur is to provide accessibility to all public facilities. Besides buildings this also includes the City's
sidewalk system. When the Federal Government originally passed the ADA legislation an unrealistic
goal of making all sidewalks to be ADA accessible was proposed. Recent court decisions have
determined that only sidewalks adjacent to roads which have either been reconstructed or resurfaced
must be made accessible.
The City has proposed to placed the necessary curb ramps in a multi-year program. We are
proposing to complete 57 intersections under this contract . We anticipate that a program similar to this
one will be proposed for several years to come. Once all required sidewalk curb ramps have been
installed a yearly rehabilitation project will then be considered.
Bids were received on October 27, 1994, for the subject Sidewalk Curb Ramps Project. The results
of the letting aze as follows:
Compared to
Contractor Bid Price Enineer's Est.
Engineer's Estimate $ 153,832.50 --------
A.G.W.
