� r • , � � e • � • <br /> FDUCATInN PRniE('TS- K-12 AND Hi .HF,R F,DUCA7'inN <br /> "Perry Peacock's SR's-Reduce,Reuse,Recycle,Researcl� & 'Riting" August through May <br /> Dr.Randy Brooks,Director of the Writing Major at Millikin University and author of a forthcoming book on Macintosh-basecl desk- <br /> top publishing,received a faculty internship with the Decatur-Macon County Clean Communiry System (CCS) to coordinate a writ- <br /> ing-across-the-curriculum project. lfiis project focuses on education in solid waste management, landfill diversion and other local <br /> environmental concerns. Swdent teams from all county schools are going on field trips,conducting interviews,researching environ- <br /> mental issues,and gathering the stories about what is being done locally.Each student tea�n is focusing on a particular research sub- <br /> ject.Students have the opportunity to write about their co►nmunity on matters that affect them as citizens.They are experiencing the joy <br /> and confidence of writing based on first-hand research,direct interviews,and local events.They are involved in a long tenn writing pro- <br /> ject, watching it develop from conception to published form. Dr. Brooks is training the team at Johns Hill Magnet School on <br /> HypetCard. This team will handle the canputer documentation and publish the research in May for use on Macintosh computers. <br /> Dr.Brooks also provides workshops on Hypercard and Macintosh use for interested team leaders and teachers In March ,Dr. Brooks <br /> will hold 6 workshops for local teachers and teachers attending the Central Illinois Educational Conference held here in Decatur,1L. <br /> We are working on funding to place Macintosh computers and the progra�n at Decatur Public Library, Macon Counry Children's <br /> Museum,local school libraries and SunStar Botanical Gardens.First publication to the Macintosh computer was June 19I3. <br /> Following are examples of the team subjects:Arbenta-Oreana Middle Scl�ool through High School six teams- 1)What local agri- <br /> cultural suppliers do to protect the environment 2)Relationship between ADM's Co-generation process and material suppliers <br /> 3)Chlorinated Hydrocarbons and how they are used by local businesses and their efFect on the ozone 4)How metals are recycled <br /> locally and how this bene�ts our environment 5)How Continental Carbonic uses Waste CO2 from ADM to mal:� products. 6) <br /> Christmas tree farms effect on the environment. Zion John Adams Elementary School Kindergarten and 2nd grade teams:l)The history of paper <br /> 2)Recycling paper(how to make your own recycled paper) Southside Elementary School6th grade team: 1) What is a r�unforest? <br /> 2)How do global rainforests effect us? 3)What are endangered species and how do they effect us? <br /> ��Recycled Ornament Contest" Fall Semester <br /> Fifteen local schools encouraged students in grades kindergarten through 12th to see trash in a different light. More than 450 orna- <br /> ments were created using cans,newspapers,toilet tissue rolls,shoulder pads from one of Mom's old sweaters,wrapping paper,egg <br /> cartons,plastic jugs and other common items which frequently find Iheir way to the landfill. The progra�n content evolves as environmental concerns change. Each location visited has a <br /> guide who gives a presentation on site. Macon County Landfill,Decatur-Macon County Composting Facility, Decatur Paper Recycle, <br /> Inc.and Recyclin�Unlimi[ed,and Waste Recycling, Ine.(handle curbside for Decatur) ��re current tour sites.
