Couter, Corporation Counsel <br /> RE: Airport Fire Pit <br /> During the 1970 ' s and early 1980 ' s, the Decatur Fire <br /> Department used a portion of the Decatur Airport property to <br /> train in the suppression of high-intensity fires, the kind <br /> generally associated with airplane crashes. Firefighters from <br /> the District, assigned to the Airport, also participated. A <br />� "fire pit" was used for these drills - discarded fuel oil was <br /> deposited into a pit, then ignited; firefighters trained by <br /> suppressing and extinguishing the fire. This training method was <br /> discontinued in the early or middle 1980 ' s. <br /> Recently, the Illinois EPA has requested that the area be <br /> cleaned up. Given the history of the pit, the City Manager and <br /> the Director of the Park District agreed to share the cost. The <br /> cost for said project was $142 , 923 . 59. As per the agreement <br /> noted, the City' s share is $71 ,461 . 80 . A resolution on the <br /> Council agenda for June 7 ratifies the agreement between the City <br /> and the Park District and authorizes the reimbursement of the <br /> District. <br /> Staff recommends approval of the resolution. <br />
