As our
community now begins to consider housing initiatives resulting
from the Cranston-Gonzalez National Affordable Housing Act,
adopted by Congress in late 1990, I will again offer items of
information and a few suggestions which may serve to enhance
the new "CHAS" five-year planning process.
With extended thanks offered to the resources of the State of
Illinois' Census Information Coordinator, research staff at
Southern and Northern Illinois Universities, and most
particularly the staff of Decatur's excellent public library
facilities; I will begin by offering census updates drawn from
Public Law Report 94-171 and the 1990 lllinois Summary Population
and Housing Characteristics Report, noted as follows:
- The City's "over age 65" population has increased by 22 .810,
which represents a real increase of 1190 persons in
comparison to 1980.
- Decatur's "over age 65" population percentage is the second
highest amongst the fourteen MSA Illinois cities located
outside Chicago/Cook County.
- The City of Decatur holds the lowest population density rate
amongst these same cities with a factor of 873.8 persons per
square kilometer and the rate of housing units per person
is the second highest in the multi-city grouping with .4467
units per capita.
363 South Main St. • Suite 535 • Decatur IL 62523
Phone: (217)423-3322 Fax: (217)422-1519
