CLARK, DIRECTOR OF DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY
 DEVELOPMENT
SUBJECT: UMTA ALTERNATIVE FUEL GRANT AGREEMENT
Upon City Council approval, the attached resolution will
authorize the execution of a Section 3 Alternative Fuels Initia-
tive Grant Agreement with the U. S. Department of Transportation,
Urban Mass Transportation Administration. The project will
entail the retrofit of 5 transit coaches with an ethanol injector
system which will replace about 22$ of the diesel fuel used.
Dispensing equipment will be installed at DPTS and additional
fuel tanks will be installed on the buses.
The five coaches will be operated in regular route service
for a 6-month period during which time the performance and fuel
economy will be monitored. A new diesel engine will also be
purchased and shipped to an EPA-certified laboratory for emis-
sions testing before and after the installation of the ethanol
injector system. It is expected that the system will help to
reduce air pollution and to provide some economic benefits for
the community.
The total project costs are estimated at $122 ,000 . The
federal government is funding 75, or $91 ,500 and the remaining
25$ will be funded by State and local sources. The project is
expected to start within the next 30 days.
