r
.
_ EXCERPTS FROM ,
: TRAFFIC & PARKING COMMITTEE MEETING
 JANUARY, 1994
Item #2 Request for a four-way stop intersection at Lincoln
Avenue and 17th Street.
Schiller was confused by the accidents per million figure, which
was not nearly the number as was found on Illinois Street at the
last meeting, when staff recommended against traffic control.
He did not notice a sight hazard.
Newell stated his main concern here was that all accidents were
related to school traffic and a definite accider►t pattern is
present. He would like to install a yield sign at this inter-
section to designate who has the right-of-way. .
Schiller believes this is the same problem addressed on Illinois
Street.
I Newell stated that the difference is that there is much more
traffic here 'ust before and 'ust after school. There was no
7 7
accident pattern on Illinois or sight distance problems to
warrant traffic control. Short of getting the school parking
lot entrance blocked off, there is no other way to stop the
traffic flow. There is a stop sign a block away, but the high
school students run it. Those drivers would run a stop sign
here also, so it would be of no use.
Moss asked if stop signs for Lincoln could be installed instead
of yield.
Newell believes 90 or 95 cf the time there is very little need
for traffic control, except before and after school, and a yield
sign would be better obeyed under those circumstances than a
stop sign.
It was moved and seconded (Nordholm, Cook) to accept staff
recommendation that yield signs be placed at thi- iei-etiorr
facing Lincoln Avenue. There be:.ng. no one opposed, the motion
carried.
