Marley, P.E., Public Works Director <br /> SUBJECT: Traf�c Control Ordinances Authorizing the Installation of Stop Signs at the <br /> Intersection of: <br /> 1) East Main Street with 16« Street Facing East Main Street <br /> 2) East Main Street with 17r� Street Facing East Main Street <br /> 3) East Main Street with 18t� Street Facing East Main Street <br /> 4) East Main Street with 19r� Street Facing East Main Street <br /> 5) East Main Street with 20�h Street Facing East Main Street <br /> 6) East Main Street with 215�Street Facing East Main Street <br /> SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: <br /> Staff recommends the approval of the attached Ordinances authorizing the installation of stop <br /> signs at the intersections of East Main Street and 16th Street with signs facing Main, East Main <br /> Street and 17th Street with signs facing Main, East Main Street and 18�" Street with signs facing <br /> Main, East Main Street and 19t� Street with signs facing Main, East Main Street and 20t� Street <br /> with signs facing Main, and East Main Street and 21 sr Street with signs facing Main. <br /> BACKGROUND: <br /> September 22, 2016—Traffic & Parking Commission approved a request from City staff <br /> recommending that stop signs be placed along East Main Street at each intersection from 16tn <br /> Street to 21 st Street. The request for stop signs originated from the Decatur Police Department <br /> citing a high number of accidents and lack of traffic control at these intersections. While the <br /> other intersections along this corridor do not have high accident rates staff recommends adding <br /> stop signs to those intersections as well to not leave a few uncontrolled intersections among the <br /> several controlled ones. All of the stop signs will face E. Main St. as that is considered the minor <br /> street based on traffic volumes and speeds. <br /> The Traffic and Parking Commission's recommendation is attached with the ordinances for <br /> Council's review. <br /> SCHEDULE: Stop signs are usually installed within 10 days of approval. <br /> 1 <br />
