Item Coversheet Page 1 of 1
in
Public Works
DATE: 3/27/2017
MEMO: 2017-24
TO: Honorable Mayor Moore Wolfe and City Council Members
FROM: Tim Gleason,City Manager
Richard G.Marley,P.E.,Public Works Director
SUBJECT: Ordinance Authorizing the Installation of Stop Signs at the Intersection of East Marietta Street and North Warren
Street Facing East Marietta Street.
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the approval of the attached Ordinance authorizing the installation of
stop signs at the intersection of East Marietta and North Warren Street facing East Marietta Street.
BACKGROUND:
February 23,2017—Traffic&Parking Commission approved a request from City staff recommending that the existing yield
signs at the intersection of East Marietta Street and North Warren Street be replaced with stop signs.
City staff observed with the recent opening of Crossing Healthcare at 320 E.Central Avenue, traffic has increased along North
Warren Street. The intersection of East Marietta Street and North Warren Street currently has yield signs facing Warren Street, but
now that the traffic on Warren Street surpasses that of Marietta Street traffic control should face the street with less traffic.Based
on accidents and traffic volumes the accident rate at this intersection is high enough to warrant a change in traffic control.Using
stop signs to control right-of-way at an intersection is more typical than using yield signs.
The Traffic and Parking Commission's recommendation is attached with the ordinance for Council's review.
SCHEDULE: Stop signs are usually installed within 14 days of approval.
PRIOR COUNCIL ACTION: None
POTENTIAL OBJECTIONS: No objections anticipated.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Traffic and Parking Commission
STAFF REFERENCE: Richard Marley,Public Works Director,and Matt Newell,City Engineer.Richard Marley,Public Works
Director, will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any questions of the Council on this item.
BUDGET/TIME IMPLICATIONS:
Budget Impact: Budgetary impacts are approximately$250 for the installation of the requested signs and pavement markings.
Staffing Impact: Approximately 2 hours of staff time to make and install the signs.
ATTACHMENTS:
Description Type
2017-24 Ordinance Ordinance
2017-24 Location Map Backul)[Material
2017-24 Excerpt from T&P Meeting Backup N,laterial
https:Hdecatur.novusagenda.com/AgendaWeb/CoverSheet.aspx?ItemID=1075 4/3/2017
